Bryan is a city in Williams County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Williams County. At the 2000 census, 8,333 residents lived in Bryan.

History

Bryan was founded in 1840 and named after the State Auditor John A. Bryan. In 1854 it was a small village with 40-50 houses. The place soon became known by its artesian wells. Almost every house in Bryan had such a fountain. They were easy and cheap to produce and brought to the place the name of a Fountain City. That even in summer 10-13 degree cold water contained unusually high concentrations of magnesium and iron, and was considered to be very healthy.

The town developed into a local commercial and industrial center and got in 1941 awarded the status of a city. 1946, there were 5,386 people.

Infrastructure

The city is located on State Route 15, about 10 kilometers south of the Ohio Turnpike highways. Passenger rail transport is concerned by a line of Amtrak. In Bryan also the Williams County Airport is located. In the village there are 14 public parks, 27 churches, several primary schools and one high school. The water is still promoted artesian well with help. Seven wells with a capacity of an average of 1.9 million gallons per day supply the city with drinking water.

Attractions

In downtown Bryan two districts are listed buildings, which are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Bryan Downtown Historic District and the Fountain City Historic District.
