Geography

Brzesko is located about 48 km east of Krakow and 28 km west of Tarnów. The city is situated on the banks of the river Uszwica.

History

Until 1772

The area around the city Brzesko was populated already in 8300-4500 BC. In the bottom traces found suggest that BC agriculture was operated in the 5th century and that the area was a cultural center.

In the early Middle Ages, a castle was located on a hill near Brzesko. She served for the defense of the territory that belonged to Wislanenstaat. In the 9th or 10th century the castle was abandoned.

The city was chartered in 1385 by Brzesko Magdeburg Law. Until the 17th century it remained a small town in private ownership. 1657, the city was destroyed by the Seven Years' War in large parts.

1772-1939

1772 it was under the rule of Austria. 1845 founded the Hohenzollern family Götz ( later ennobled as Götz of Okocim ) a brewery in the city. From it comes the still well-known beer brand Okocim. 1850 Brzesko seat of the district (Polish: powiat ).

1939-1945

On September 5, 1939, German troops occupied the city. 1941 a ghetto was established, had to live in the approximately 6,000 Jews. On 19 January 1945 the Red Army reached the place.

1945 to today

A development in housing existed in the 1960s by the housing association. There new schools have been established, including for Electromechanics. One of these schools was housed in the "Palace idol ". 1983, the new hospital was put into operation.

From 1975 to 1998 Brzesko belonged to the Tarnów Voivodeship.

Economy and Transport

By Brzesko the DK runs 4 In the city the DK 75 strikes the DK4. Through the town they run on a common route. In the city and the province road begins 768 ( Droga wojewódzka 768). By Bzesko the railway line runs from Krakow to Przemysl on the border with Ukraine.

In Okocim district is the location of the " brewery Okocim " in which the eponymous beer is brewed.

The municipality consists of the nine Soltysships Bucze, Jadowniki, Jasień, Mokrzyska, Okocim, Poreba Spytkowska, Sterkowiec, Szczepanów and Wokowice.

Geography

The municipality has an areal extent of 102.57 km ², of which 67 % are used for agriculture and 18% is forested.

Education

The municipality has 14 kindergartens, eleven elementary schools, four middle schools, two school centers with elementary and middle school and a non-governmental university.
