Bubba Brooks

Kenneth David " Bubba" Brooks ( * May 29, 1922 in Fayetteville (North Carolina), † April 11, 2002 in New York City ) was an American rhythm & blues and jazz musician (tenor saxophone).

Life and work

Bubba Brooks was the older brother of Tina Brooks. He began his career in the Medicine Show by Pepper McAllister. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army, where he played in an army band with James Moody. After his discharge from the army in 1944 he moved to New York City, where he performed at Minton 's Playhouse in Harlem and grill. In 1947 he toured through North Carolina in a band with Sonny Payne, then played with George Barkley in the Baby Grand in New York City, originated with Barkley to 1947/48 first shots. From 1948 to 1957 he worked with Sonny Thompson, as well as an accompanist of the R & B singer Lula Reed. In 1958 he worked with Jimmy McCracklin, 1961 Phil Upchurch. In the 1960s, he was also active as a session musician in popular music. From 1967 to 1973 he performed with the alto saxophonist Charles Williams and Don Pullen in New York, created for Mainstream Records three albums with Williams. In 1974, he briefly played with Jimmy McGriff, 1976 he was a member of the band by Bill Doggett, to which he belonged for two decades. Mid-1990s, Brooks worked with Bross Townsend, Carrie Smith and the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. The mid- 90s, he produced three albums in the mainstream jazz idiom. In 1999 he went with Al Casey on a tour of France. David Bubba Brooks, stylistically leaning on Arnett Cobb and Don Byas, worked from 1950 to 2001 to 53 recording sessions.
