Bucerius Institute for Research of Contemporary German History and Society

Director: Amos Morris - Reich

The Bucerius Institute for Research of Contemporary German History and Society at the University of Haifa was founded in 2001 by the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius. At the Institute works to contemporary history as well as social, political and cultural presence in Germany. For a deeper exploration of these themes at the University of Haifa and the promotion of academic exchanges in Germany, Europe and Israel should be encouraged. The founder and first director of the Institute was Yfaat white. Since 2008, Amos Morris - Reich is the Director of the Bucerius Institute.

Research

The Institute promotes research in the field of contemporary history and the social, cultural and political reality in Germany and is working to promote a greater understanding of modern Germany in the academic community. Furthermore, it supports the academic exchange between Germany, Europe, and Israel. Thematically and methodologically it deals with identity formation, migration, integration, multiculturalism, citizenship and liberalism and, increasingly, the issues of " race", "visual history" and the history of science in the German, Israeli and European context. The Bucerius Institute sees itself as a source of information about the post-war Germany and contemporary developments in Europe for students and Wissenschaftleren at the University of Haifa and the public.

Academic and Public Relations

The Institute organizes yearly conferences, workshops and guest lectures, such as " Queer experiences falling on the Third Reich and the Holocaust ", " Perspectives on Contemporary Iran and Iranian Culture in Germany and Israel " and "Concepts of 'Race ' in the History of the Humanities ". Moreover, inter alia, Rita Süssmuth, Josef Joffe and Wolf Biermann in the context of special events held lectures. Periodically, the Institute organizes special events such as film festivals and music performances. 2007, the Institute took part in the organization of a DEFA / GDR film festivals on the subject " German Cinema from Behind the Iron Curtain" part and organized in 2008 a musical drama entitled "The Myth and the Real Life of Marlene Dietrich ."

Scholarships and academic exchanges

The Bucerius Institute maintains a scholarship and exchange program, supported with the Israeli and German scientists. At the invitation of the Bucerius Institute international researchers also came to the University of Haifa. Result of this collaboration are collaborations with the Leo Baeck Institute, the German - Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development, the Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture, the Institute for the History of German Jews, the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, the working Group " Didactics of Biology " at the University of Jena, represented in Israel German foundations and other scientific institutions in Germany.

Publications

In March 2005, the Bucerius Institute published the anthology " Memory and Amnesia: The Holocaust in Germany", published by Gilad Margalit and Yfaat Weiss in Hebrew. This volume contains the result of the one-week workshop, which was 2001/2002 conducted by researchers in the field of the Holocaust in Israel, Germany, Europe and the United States. Furthermore a number of essays from the conference "Europe and Israel: What Next " go to the " re-migration " in the " Leo Baeck Institute Yearbook 2004" was added. The Institute is also in an issue of the journal published the results of his conference "Deadly Neighbors " "middle 36 Journal of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research ." There are publications of Associate Members of the Institute, which deal with the actual history of Germany and of the relationship between Jews and non-Jews in Germany, Europe and Israel.
