Buchtar Tabuni

Buchtar Tabuni (* 1979 in Papani, West Papua ) is a political activist for the independence of West Papua by Indonesia.

Since 1998, he studied engineering in Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan. A prelude to his political activity was an accidental death of his relatives, Opinus Tabuni, 9 August 2008 during a peaceful demonstration in the city Ramp -up at Wamena. After this incident, he organized a protest rally. In the development of its activities, he was one of the founders of the National Committee for West Papua. He also organized protest rallies of solidarity with the campaign: International Parliamentarians for West Papua. That's why he was arrested on December 3, 2008 by Indonesian authorities and sentenced in court proceedings to 3 years in prison. On 17 August 2011 he was released from prison. In 2011, Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience.
