Budapest Castle Hill Funicular

The Budavári Sikló is a funicular railway in Budapest. It leads from the Danube to the castle hill.

The funicular was opened in 1870 and is one of the oldest funicular railways that still operate on the original track body. The construction of the railway for the transport of passengers carried in 1869 on the initiative of Odon Széchenyi, the son of István Széchenyi, so that the train on October 23, 1869 to complete their first test run and was opened on March 2, 1870. She was the second in Europe. A similar system existed only in Lyon. The railway line was crossed by two pedestrian bridges, but these were removed in 1900 due to an expansion of the castle garden. But they were built in 1983 according to original plans.

In 1920 the railway came into the possession of the city. During World War II, both the rail track and the car was destroyed by bombs. Only in 1983 it was rebuilt.

The base station is located opposite the Széchenyi Chain Bridge on the Clark Ádám tér, the hill station is located at the Szent György tér on Castle Hill.
