Budatín Castle

The Budatín Castle (Slovak Budatín ) is a castle in the north- west of Slovakia, near the city of Žilina at the confluence of the rivers Kysuca and Waag.

History

It was built as a castle in the second half of the 13th century, near the spot where the Kysuca flows into the Waag, for the purpose of tariff revenues collected at this point. Beginning of the 14th century that the original royal fortress in the hands of Matthew Csák. This reinforced the fortress device ( Gothic towers ) and built within the old castle walls, new residential and commercial buildings.

From the year 1487 the castle was owned by Gáspár Szunyogh (Slovak Gašpar sunog ), in whose family it remained until the end of the 18th century. From 1545, the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, the works continued for nearly half a century back. A Turkish threat from the south and riots at the beginning of the 17th century forced the Szunyoghs to strengthen the fortifications. These works were also executed in the Renaissance style. Thus, the castle had turned the Gothic style in a Renaissance property. During the Baroque period in the 17th century, the work of a chapel and numerous buildings within the castle walls concentrated. Likewise, a surrounding park was completed in 1715 and had become of the estate is a Baroque style Wasserburg. After extinction of the family Szunyogh the castle came into the possession of Csákys who owned it until 1945. During the Revolution of 1848/ 49 in Austria, the castle of imperial troops was severely damaged and the entire device including the precious library burned. Most of the destruction was repaired until 1870 and rebuilt as Schlossanalage in classic style, based on the Romanesque. Subsequently, the plant served as a barracks. The size of the park has been reduced by the construction of Košice- Berger railway in 1872. The last major renovation was carried out from 1922 to 1923, based on historical and romantic motifs. After the expropriation of Csáky 1945, the palace was owned by the state and is now a hostel for three exhibitions at the Waag Museum ( Považie ).
