Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story

Buddy is a musical by Alan Janes and Rob Bettinson on the life of "Rock ' n' Roll" musician Buddy Holly.

The jukebox musical (English Jukebox = Jukebox ) was premiered on 12 October 1989 at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London's West End and played from 1990 on Broadway in New York. The German premiere took place at the State Theatre Altenburg on 17 January 1993.

In Germany it was from 16 December 1994, in Hamburg in a newly built at the port theater (today: Theater im Hafen Hamburg) for over six years listed (until 2001 ). Of 8 October 2009 to 31 July 2010, it was seen at the Colosseum Theater in Essen.

Content

Everything starts in his native Lubbock ( Texas). Buddy and his friends play at the local radio station instead Country songs again and again Rock ' n' Roll. Nevertheless, the manager of the station gives them a recording contract with Decca, where they absorb Country songs.

In order to play the music they love to go Buddy and his band to Clovis (New Mexico) in the studio of Norman Petty. Buddy called his band The Crickets. There, they take on many of his famous pieces. Later, they are invited because they are considered a dark-skinned band in the Apollo Theater in Harlem (New York). But the audience accepts it despite light skin, because the music "black" is. They occur there with a colored singer. Buddy gets to know in New York Maria Elena Santiago and marries her. With new studio recordings in Clovis there is disagreement and he separated from Norman Petty and the Crickets.

End of January 1959 is Buddy with other stars (including Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper ) on tour. After her performance in Clear Lake ( Iowa) on February 3, 1959 want Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper fly to the next show. The machine crashes in the snow storm. All occupants die.

In the musical, the pieces of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper be played and sung live on stage by the performers.

Awards

Has been nominated for numerous awards, above all, Paul Hipp of Buddy Holly had both shown at West End and Broadway. He was nominated for a Tony Award, among other things, a Drama Desk Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, respectively, in the category " Best Actor ". He could win the Theatre World Award. The musical itself was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for " Best New Musical".
