Bueng Boraphet

Bueng Boraphet ( Thai บึง บอระเพ็ด, Boraphet Swamp ) is a marsh and sea area east of the city of Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Sawan Province and south of the Nan River near the confluence of the Ping.

Bueng Boraphet is the largest freshwater reservoir of central Thailand and extends over 224 km ². Originally the area was covered by a single swamp, but was flooded in 1930 to improve conditions for fishing.

On Bueng Boraphet is the only point at which the Sirintaraschwalbe ( sirintarae Pseudochelidon, named after Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ) has been spotted, but this is not appeared after 1980 and probably extinct. A 106 km ² area in 1975 was designated as a conservation area. On August 1, Bueng Boraphet was declared one of the internationally important wetlands in Thailand.
