Buenos Aires Cabildo

The Cabildo de Buenos Aires is a government building, which served as the seat of government during the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. It is located in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. Today the building is a museum.

History

The Mayor Manuel de Frías promised on March 3, 1608 the construction of the Cabildo in Plaza de Mayo, because the government of the city lacked an appropriate building. The construction was financed by tax revenue from the port. In 1610 it was completed, but soon after it was too small and had to be extended.

Already in 1682, the building was due to the lack of building maintenance, almost a ruin and a new building with two floors and a width of eleven arches was planned. However, the construction work did not start until July 23, 1725 were exposed to 1728 and before 1731 resumed. Shortly after the work has been delayed due to lack of money again. The tower of the new Cabildo was completed in 1764, the rest was not even on the May Revolution in 1810 finished.

1880 increased the architect Pedro Benoit the tower by ten meters and constructed a dome, which was covered with glazed tiles, instead of the traditional red brick, covered. The tower and the three northernmost arches of the main building were nine years later demolished to make space for the Avenida de Mayo. 1931, the three southernmost arcs were still demolished for the Avenida Julio A. Roca the system, so that only five of the original eleven arches remained.

Reconstructed in 1940 by the architect Mario Buschiazzo the original condition of the Cabildo based on old blueprints. The tower, the red tiles, the iron bars on the windows and the wooden window frames and doors were restored.

National Museum Cabildo

Currently, the Cabildo houses the " Museo Nacional del Cabildo y la Revolución de Mayo " ( National Museum of the Cabildo and the May Revolution ), will be exhibited in the paintings, artifacts, clothing and jewelry from the 18th century. In the courtyard of the Cabildo is still the original fountain from 1835 to see.
