Red-tailed eagle's beak ( Eutoxeres condamini )

The red-tailed eagle's beak or red-tailed sickle Schnabel ( Eutoxeres condamini ) is a species of bird in the family of hummingbirds ( Trochilidae ).

Features

The red-tailed eagle's beak reaches a body length of 12 to 13 cm. It is similar to the eagle's beak, the outer tail feathers, however, are yellow-brown at the base, the tips are also white. There is a shiny, blue-green stain that is missing in the eagle's beak on the sides of the neck. The underside is not like the eagle's beak black and white, but rußfarben and dashed yellowish white.

Dissemination

The distribution area includes Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Habitat and behavior

The behavior is that of the eagle's beak - like hummingbirds. Red-tailed eagle's beak hummingbirds prefer the shady thicket, where they are individually usually looks in the undergrowth. Their flight is slow, with audible wing beats. They feed on the nectar of heliconia, while exploring the corolla they secure grip on the plants. They also take insects from the stems and branches. As far as known all breeding activities are carried out by the female and like all hummingbirds they lay two eggs.

System

It describes two subspecies:

  • Eutoxeres condamini gracilis Berlepsch & proud man, 1902 - Eastern Andes of Peru and northwestern Bolivia.
  • Eutoxeres condamini condamini - Eastern Andes from Colombia to northern Peru south-east.
