Buffalo County (Nebraska)

The Buffalo County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kearney, which was named after the Fort Kearny.

Geography

The County is located just southeast of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 2526 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Buffalo County was formed in 1855 from former Indian land. It was named after the then passing here herds of buffalo.

2000 2010

According to the census of 2000, there were 42 259 people in Buffalo County. Of these, 2,788 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 15,930 households and 10,227 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.18 percent White, 0.55 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.68 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.20 percent from other races groups. 1.03 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 15,930 households out of which 32.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, 35.8 percent were non-families, 26.1 percent of all households and 9.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size is 3.02 people.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.0 percent population under 18 years, 17.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 19.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 36,782, and the median income for a family was $ 46,247. Males have a median income of $ 30,182, women $ 21,977. The per capita income was $ 17,510. 6.3 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 10.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.5 percent of those 65 years.
