The Bugey nuclear power plant is located in the Bugey in the southeast of the French Department Ain, in the municipality of Saint- Vulbas on the Rhône.

Key data

The entire plant area covers 100 acres and employs approximately 1,250 people. The operator of the nuclear power plant is the French company Electricité de France (EDF). The nuclear power plant with four reactors in operation with an installed gross capacity of 3,724 MW is one of the larger in France. Every year, it feeds an average of 25 billion kilowatt hours into the public power grid while delivering 40 percent of the current of the Rhone -Alpes region.

History

With the construction of the first nuclear reactor Bugey -1, was launched on 1 December 1965. He was put into operation on 15 April 1972. In the years 1978 and 1979 four more reactors, Bugey -2 went to Bugey -5, in operation. On May 27, 1994 Bugey -1 shut down.

In the first reactor is a gas-cooled reactor of the type UNGG. The reactors 2-5 are pressurized water reactors. The cooling of the reactors is carried out by water of the Rhone in four 128 -meter high cooling towers. In recent years, the plant has been modernized due to lack of seismic safety based on safety criteria.

In May 2012, reached a Greenpeace activist with a motor - glider in the high security area of the power plant and threw smoke bombs. The action should show the " vulnerability of French nuclear power plants to attacks from the air, " according to Greenpeace.

Security

In the case of a strong earthquake could lead to failure of the emergency cooling. A report by the ASN in October, according to 2002, certain protection features to ensure the cooling of the reactor blocks are no longer guaranteed during earthquakes. This is a safety-relevant valve whose functioning is compromised in an earthquake.

Data of the reactor units
