Horn signals are melodies that are blown with the horn. Horn signals have been used in particular to the 20th century by the military and the post office. Today, signals are still used for hunting as guidance signals or as a tradition.

Horn signals have been used in the Roman Legion. There the Bucina and Cornu, the precursor for the modern horn, were used. The horn was there mainly used for tactical signals to direct the field characters, and thus the individual units.

From the Thirty Years War bugle calls were always used, on the one to worry about along with drums for a communication on the battlefield, to donate to the other the enemy confusion. Over the years, have been introduced different horn signals when the armies in Europe and North America.

In particular, in the cavalry, it was common to install horn signals in the daily routine barracks. In the U.S. Army, each order had a specific signal in the camp. The alarm call " boots and saddle" was the most important reputation and was played several times a day for exercise.

Through the horn signals a commander of his unit could command, as she had to continue to operate. Typical commands were " attack ", " flank left", "right flank ", " message", " trot ", " canter ", " standing ", " Drop it ", " Fire ", " Fire Setting " or " distributing ".

The now well-known signal is the signal for the attack used in many Western ( batch ) of the U.S. Cavalry.
