Description

Bulbophyllum species form on a creeping rhizome pseudobulbs. These are dense clump like each other or are separated by a long rhizome. They are ovate, often somewhat angular; they consist of a single internode. The pseudobulbs are surrounded by low- sheets, these are not formed foliage leaf-like. At the top of the pseudobulbs ever sit one or two leaves. The leaves are folded in the bud along the middle and have a release fabric for pseudobulb.

The racemose inflorescence develops laterally from the base of the pseudobulbs. The resupinierten flowers are free or are embedded in a fleshy, thickened inflorescence axis. The short column is provided with a distinct foot, at the start the lip and the lateral sepals. The lip is split, the two outer petals sometimes have a ciliated border. Four pollinia sit in two subjects, they are not provided with an adhesive organ.

Many Bulbophyllum species are pollinated by flies and sometimes give off an odor of rot, decay and carrion.

Dissemination

The species of the genus Bulbophyllum come pantropisch ago, with a clear focus in the Paläotropis: Of the more than 1000 species are only 75 in America home.
