Buncombe County, North Carolina

Buncombe County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Asheville.

Geography

The County is located in western North Carolina, is in the north about 30 miles from Tennessee, located in the south about 35 miles from South Carolina and has an area of ​​1709 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Madison County, Yancey County, McDowell County, Rutherford County, Henderson County and Haywood County.

History

Buncombe County was formed on 5 December 1791 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford County. It was named, as well as the district capital Asheville, according to Edward Buncombe, an officer in the Revolutionary War.
