The Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV ) in Austria is responsible for cadastral surveying and is the national metrology institute. His responsibilities include the following items:

  • Management of the land cadastre in Austria: The Cadastre is the planliche description of all land in Austria and is everywhere in digital form. He serves as an accompanying element to the land register.
  • Create and maintain the official survey points ( horizontal and vertical control points ): identify points that serve as starting points for land survey must be available in the populated area at intervals of about 700 to 1200 m.
  • Operation of the GPS satellite positioning service Austrian Positioning Service ( APOS )
  • Management of the digital landscape and terrain elevation model and the database name GEONAM Austria
  • Production of the official Austrian Maps: The following maps are produced and proceeds continuously: Austrian map 1:50,000 ( ÖK 50, and in magnification 1:25.000), 1:200,000 ( ÖK 200), 1:500,000
  • Orthophotos and aerial maps
  • Surveying and administrative work related to the state border
  • Leadership of the National Metrology Institute ( NMI), which provides measurement standards according to the SI unit system.
  • Physico- technical inspection service for the technical implementation of calibration and testing of measuring instruments under connection to the national standards.

To perform the tasks, the BEV has in addition to the central institutions of the basic tasks in Vienna branch offices throughout Austria. These are run as surveying offices or Metrology and Surveying Offices ( full functionality ) or as information centers (only for party traffic, provide information).
