Bundoran

Bundoran ( Irish: Bun Dobhráin ) is a coastal town in County Donegal in the northwest of the Republic of Ireland.

History

Bundoran has retained the character of a seaside resort today. The first mention of Bundoran dates back to 1777 when a Viscount Enniskillen there built his summer residence Bundoran Lodge. He was followed by more and more of his wealthy contemporaries claimed as visitors discovered the Bundoran the beach and the sea air because of its own.

Until about the middle of the 19th century also existed today Bundoran from two different villages. Bundoran was the village west of the bridge over the River Bradog, now known as the West End. East of the bridge, about 2 miles away, was the village of Single Street. Between these two separate communities was the townland of Drumacrin. This area is now a part of the present city center. Only after the opening of the station under the name of Bundoran in 1866, the two individual communities continued to develop and grow together today Bundoran. In Single Street, the majority of the indigenous population lived while in today's West End, especially the residence of wealthy newcomers beyond the bridge.

With the increase in Trendes to travel, especially by the railway, the popularity of Bundoran skipped the class barriers and more and more Irish people from the east coast discovered the charm of the place and returned year after year back here, so that Bundoran at the end of the 19th century finally was one of the most popular seaside resorts or seaside resorts in Ireland and hotels in large numbers were opened all over the city. Before the start of " Irish economic miracle", the end of the 1980s, a ride on the road along the coast exuded the charm of that era still pending.

Geography and Data

Bundoran is located a few kilometers south of Ballyshannon in the extreme south of County Donegal, close to the border with County Leitrim on the N15 from Lifford on Donegal Town to Sligo Town. There is also the " Irish Bottleneck " ( bottleneck ), by a projecting far to the west boundary corner of Northern Ireland, the remaining territory of the Republic of Ireland at this point is only about 6 km wide, so will Bundoran also passed by all, from the Irish west to County Donegal travel, want to enter without Britain.

The population of Bundoran was determined during Census 2006, 1706 people. Classroom Bundoran is one of Donegal South West and will, inter alia, represented by Mary Coughlan.

In a devastating hotel fire in the heart of the city in August 1980, ten people, locals and tourists, were killed.
