Bunia

Bunia, the capital of Ituri district in Orientale province, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, estimated (2009) 106.000 inhabitants. Bunia is located north of Mount Hoyo and west of Lake Albert. The Ituri River flows about 20 kilometers south past Bunia. The river Shari meets the Ituri River about ten kilometers southwest of the town of Bunia.

There is a small airfield ( ICAO code: FZKA ).

The city is the center of ethnic clashes between the Lendu and Hema tribes ( Ituri conflict).

In 2003, EUFOR troops arrived in the region in Bunia in Operation Artemis used.
