Bunky Green

Bunky Green ( born April 23, 1935 in Milwaukee ) is an American jazz saxophonist ( alto), jazz teacher, composer and arranger.

Green first played in clubs in Milwaukee and was originally heavily influenced by Charlie Parker. In the early 1960s he jumped short for Jackie McLean in the projects of Charles Mingus in New York, which had a formative influence for him. He then moved to Chicago, where he among other things with Sonny Stitt ( Soul in the Night, Stitt Goes Green ), Louie Bellson, Andrew Hill, Yusef Lateef and Ira Sullivan played while developing his own style. He recorded as a sideman with Elvin Jones, Clark Terry, Eddie Harris. More and more he shifted the focus of his work in teaching, first from 1972 to 1989 at the Chicago State University and then from the 1990s as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. He was temporarily President of the International Association of Jazz Educators ( IAJE ), in the Hall of Fame, he was admitted in 1999 (and also in 2003 in the Jazz Education Hall of Fame by Downbeat ). Since the 1960s he has published irregularly recordings, his "Healing the Pain" from 1989 - the title alludes to the death of his parents - and that produced by Steve Coleman 2006 " Another Place " but received high ratings (5 stars) by Down Beat.

In 2007, he played for the first time in Germany at the Jazz Baltica in Salzau with his own band (Eva Kruse (bass ), Carsten Daerr (piano) and Nasheet Waits (drums) ), and with Greg Osby and Stefano Di Battista. In the same year he also joined with the Eric Legnini Trio at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

He played in the soundtrack of the TV movie A Raisin in the Sun by Bill Duke ( 1989) with Danny Glover on the play by Lorraine Hansberry.
