Bunkyo, Tokyo

Bunkyō (Japanese文 京 区, -ku ) is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo, capital of Japan. Bunkyō is located in the center of the district and is a residential area and home to many major educational institutions. Beginning with the Meiji period have lived here literati like Natsume Soseki, scholars and politicians.

History

The municipality was created on 15 March 1947 the old city districts Hongō and Koishikawa the city Tōkyō. The name plays on the phrase Bunkyō no fu (文教 の 府) for " source of education ", where instead of the character教which was identical, used for capital京which is also found in the name of Tokyo.

With the Tōkyō Metro the connection consists of several lines. District Mayor and parliament are both chosen with uniform regional elections. In the last elections in 2011 mayor Hironobu Narisawa was elected with the support of the three main parties for a second term in Bunkyō. Narisawa was 2007 Democrat member of the 34 -member municipal parliament ahead of his first choice.

Bunkyō forms a two- mandate constituency for the Prefecture of Parliament. At the last election in 2013 the two seats two years earlier unsuccessful candidate went to the Liberal Democrats Fumitaka Nakaya and the Communist Hiroko Kotake, in the mayoral election. For the lower house of the national parliament is Bunkyō - after the general election in 1892 for over a century, the political home of the Hatoyama family - along with Chūō and Taitō part of the second constituency Tokyo; Kunio Hatoyama, then still a Democrat, won the constituency, although after the electoral reform of 1990 initially, but returned to his failed candidacy in the gubernatorial election in Tokio 1999, no longer by Bunkyō back.
