Bunyoro rabbit

The bush rabbits ( Poelagus marjorita ) is a mammal of the family of hares ( Leporidae ). The range of the species is limited to two regions in Africa.

Features

Abnormalities in the body are the short ears, short hind legs and sharp claws. The rough coat is gray -brown at the top, the flanks are yellowish and the underside white. Busch rabbit achieve a head-body length of 44 to 50 centimeters and a weight of two to three kilograms.

Dissemination

The range of the species is restricted to Africa and occurs in two demarcated areas. The larger is found in Uganda, southern Sudan, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring areas, the smaller the western Angola.

Way of life

The habitat of this type are hilly grasslands, but also rocky areas. They are nocturnal and live in self-dug build, their diet consists of grasses, flowers and leaves. Sometimes they also penetrate into plantations.

After five weeks of gestation, the female gives birth to one to two pups, which are initially naked and blind. They are about five weeks suckled by the female, which often is pregnant again at the time of weaning. Life expectancy in the wild is at most four years by numerous predators ( among other raptors, genet cats and baboons ) it is far in most cases below.

True hares (Lepus )

The Busch rabbit is assigned as a distinct species and monotypic genus the rabbit ( Leporidae ). Within the species, no subspecies are distinguished. The first description of the species was made in 1929 by J. St. Leger, 1932, described this genus Poelagus and ordered this the kind as to type.

On the basis of molecular biological data was Conrad A. Matthee et al. 2004, a cladogram developed that represents the phylogenetic relationships of the genera within the bunnies to each other. Accordingly, the bush rabbit a taxon consisting of the African Rotkaninchen ( Pronolagus ) and the rabbit strip ( Nesolagus ) in South East Asia is faced as sister species. Together, this group is the sister group to all other genera of hares.
