Buprestidae

Jewel Beetle from Ch Kerremans 1903 in Wytsman P. - Genera Insectorum XII.V.

Jewel beetles ( Buprestidae ) form a widespread especially in the tropics family of beetles. With about 15,000 species and 450 genera they represent one of the eight largest beetle families

Survey

Jewel beetles are 2-80 mm long and often have a colorful, metallic luster. The head is deeply retracted into the prothorax, the eyes are relatively large, the probe penetrated and short. They resemble the body shape after the click beetles ( Elateridae ), but they lack the typical for this jump apparatus. Because of their appearance, the dazzlingly colorful jewel beetles that are targeted for insect collections. Most of the species included in their hemolymph the Bittern Buprestin (a series of Acylglucosiden ) against predators.

The genesis of the jewel beetle goes back very far. There are known fossils from the Triassic period. A variety of species is heat -loving. That is why they are represented in Central Europe with only about 100 species and live mainly in heat- favored regions and habitats. A large share of domestic in our latitudes species is already extinct or endangered in its existence. This is due not only to the destruction of their habitats, but eg also due to their popularity with collectors, to mass mortality by attracting to inadequate sources of stimulation and the like.

Both larvae and imagos are phytophagous ( herbivorous ). They feed on the wood, the bark or the leaves of their host plants. The larvae bore tortuosity, widening aisles, which are filled with the debris. They have a very large relative to the narrow and long legless body head, this is actually the prothorax strongly broadened, the appending of the small head forward.

The beetles feed on pollen, petals (especially of yellow flowers ) and leaves or needles. Some species are considered because of their destructive effect on trees and plants as pests.

The jewel beetles have a complicated family structure with several sub-families and numerous genera, reflecting the different self- development. The most species-rich genera of the family of jewel beetles are Agrilus Anthaxia and Acmaeodera that occur (with about 3000 species it is the largest genus in the animal kingdom ) and Chrysobothris, which can be found global, everywhere except in Australia, and Sphenoptera, with more than 1100 species in the Palearctic, in tropical Africa and the Orient lives.
