The Lake Dalrymple is a reservoir in the east of the Australian state of Queensland in the course of the Burdekin River.

The surface with full back is 220 km ², the storage volume of 1.86 billion cubic meters and the average depth of 8.3 m. The height of the dam is 37 m. Thus, the Lake Dalrymple is the largest reservoir in Queensland.

History

The construction of the Burdekin Falls dam began in 1984 and was completed in 1987. After the rainy season, 1988, the Lake Dalrymple was first completely filled. The construction work was carried out by Leighton Holdings.

Use

The reservoir supplies drinking water to the cities of Townsville and Thuringowa, as well as the irrigation 103,000 km ² of agricultural land up to 200 km from the coast. In the irrigated areas are, for example, Sugar cane, cotton and rice grown.

In addition, the lake for water sports and fishing will be used. But there are only a slipway for boats near the dam and the considerable turbidity of the water often makes the boating dangerous as underwater rocks can not be detected this way.
