Bure (disputed zone)

Region

Bure is an area around the village of Bure around. The area lies on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, about 70 kilometers southwest of the port city of Assab (Eritrea). Eritrea regarded the area as part of its region Debubawi red sea region, Ethiopia is one of the area to its zone Awsi Rasu in the Afar region. Passes through the area the Awash - Assab highway, which is considered an important trade route.

Current situation

The Hague Boundary Commission in 2002 came to the conclusion that Bure belong to Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the situation on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea is still tense, which is why the United Nations peacekeeping forces were stationed in Bure.

More disputed areas along the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia are Tsorona and Zalambessa and Badme.
