Bureau des Longitudes

The Bureau des Longitudes is a French astronomical institute.

History and tasks

The Bureau des Longitudes was founded on 25 June 1795. The main task was then to determine the longitude at sea (length problem). Hence comes the name.

The task has changed dramatically over the centuries. Today, the Bureau des Longitudes one of the centers for astronomical ephemeris. In the international division of labor, some institutes special tasks were assigned. Institutions that engage in Ephemeridenrechnungen for astronomers around the world who are mainly: the United States Naval Observatory ( USNO ), the Astronomical rake Institute (ARI ) and the Bureau des Longitudes.
