Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF ) was an American federal authority under the jurisdiction of the United States Treasury.

It was split by the Homeland Security Act of 25 November 2002 in two authorities in March 2003.

The successor authorities are

  • The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF ), which essentially takes over the tasks of the previous authority. It was subordinated to the Ministry of Justice and is responsible for law enforcement tasks.
  • The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau ( TTB), which remained in the Treasury and takes over the tasks of the previous fiscal authority.
