Buren, Friesland

Buren ( listen? / I ), formerly in de Nes Buyren, is a Dutch village on the West Frisian island of Ameland. Buren is the easternmost village of the island and has 670 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2004).

Economy

Previously, the inhabitants were mainly farmers and partly beach robbers, today the place in summer is marked by the many holiday guests find accommodation in converted farmhouses and cottages. In the village center you will find some takeaways, supermarket and small souvenir shops.

Attractions

  • Kooiplaats with the Nassau- duck decoy east of Buren. Amalia of Anhalt- Dessau, Princess of Nassau and baroness of Ameland, let the duck decoy 1705, a year after they had purchased Ameland, build. It caught up to 1000 ducks; the yield was determined for her son Johan Willem Friso. By 1930, these duck decoy and the corresponding Kooikershuis was in possession of the House of Orange -Nassau
