Geography

The Bureya arises on the western flank of the named after her Burejagebirges in 580 m height from the headwaters rights Bureya (Russian Prawaja Bureya ) and left Bureya (Russian Lewaja Bureya ). The rights Bureya rises on the southern slope of Esopkammes, the left Bureya on the western slope of the Dusse -Alin. These two over 2000 meters high mountain ranges represent the northern and highest parts of the Burejagebirges or its northern continuations represents the total length of the Bureya with Right Bureya is 739 km.

The river's name is derived from the Evenk word birija for "River ".

In the upper reaches, the Bureya constitute a rapidly flowing (3-4 m / s) mountain river with a narrow valley of the Khabarovsk region flows in the south-west directions. Later, the valley in the area of Nowy Urgal expands. Later in the here about 800 m high Turanagebirge is broken in a narrow valley. The river reached the Amur Oblast, which it then flows through to the mouth. Above the point where they exit from the mountains, near the settlement of Talakan, was built the Bureya Dam from the 1970s to 2009. Further downstream, above the settlement Nowobureiski, the smaller Lower Bureya Dam with hydroelectric power plant ( Nischnebureiskaja GES). After flowing through the eastern part of the Zeya - Bureya level Bureya finally opens with two arms at the village Skobelzino into the Amur.

Headwaters and upper reaches of the Bureya are in over 3,500 km ² Bureya Nature Reserve (Russian Bureinski sapowednik ).

The catchment area of 70,700 km ² comprises Bureya. Near the mouth of the river is about 500 m wide and 4 m deep, the flow velocity is 1.9 m / s In the summer months the river is often high water, the water level may rise by 6-10 meters.

The main tributaries are, from left Urgal ( Ургал ) and Tyrma ( Тырма ), from right Niman ( Ниман ) and Tujun ( Туюн ).

Right on the Bureya there are no towns, the largest towns are the settlements of urban type Nowy Urgal, Talakan, Nowobureiski and, a few kilometers away, Bureya.

Infrastructure

In the lower reaches, near Nowobureiski (as well as the settlement Bureya with the same station ) crosses the Trans-Siberian Railway and in the middle reaches, near Nowy Urgal the Baikal - Amur Mainline (BAM ) the river, each several hundred meters long bridges. Below Nowy Urgal the route of the Trans-Siberian BAM cross-connection Iswestkowaja runs - Tschegdomyn in the river valley. This stretch has to be laid for the planned flooding of the Bureya dam.
