The Burgau Bach is characterized on average one to two meters wide and the entire length of numerous meanders, allowing their impact and Gleithängen the typical dynamic interplay of erosion and sedimentation. In some sections that descend the stream bed is expanded and Burgau stream splits into several small streams to shortly thereafter to re-unite.

According to the criterion of the larger water supply, however, opens the farmer digging in the Burgau Bach, shortly before its confluence with the New billet.

Renaturation

Already in the 1980s, volunteer conservationists sat for a rewetting of the Leipzig floodplain forest one. However, this was only possible after the political change in the 1990s through the collaboration of NABU, Office for Environmental Protection of the City of Leipzig and the Saxon Ministry for Environment and Agriculture.

On the evidence of feasibility was followed by the creation of the approval documents by the Beller Consult GmbH, which had been commissioned by the Wildlife Protection Society of Germany, the national association of Saxony eV 1996. After planning permission was started by the operating Employment Promotion from December 1997 with the work of forming the river bed. Then the undercrossings of paths and railway lines, the waters crossing the Bauerngraben and intake structure at the Nahle were completed.

After over two years of construction, the Burgau Bach was inaugurated on 22 March 1999. The project cost of about 1.5 million DM were supported by funding from the Saxony Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, as well as own resources of the NABU and the city of Leipzig.
