Burgaw is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is the administrative seat of Pender County.

History

In the area of ​​today's town existed before its establishment, only a small trading post at an intersection. Burgaw originated as a railroad town, whose early development is founded on the work of the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad Company. The railway company was later renamed the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad.

In October 1836, the work on the railway line between Raleigh and Wilmington began. At the time of its completion on March 7, 1840 it was 260 km, the longest railway in the world.

First name of the place was Cypress Grove. Since January 1854 called the United States Post Office Department it Burgaw Depot. The depot is the oldest in North Carolina. In the Civil War it had a certain importance as a supply station of the Confederate States Army. It was burned down in part from the cavalry of the northern states. Loss in Fort Fisher and Wilmington in 1865 prompted the commander of the Army of the Confederate States to set up a headquarters in Burgaw Depot. The station was in February 1865 for a week as a POW camp until the negotiations on a prisoner exchange had been completed.

Pender County was split off in February 1875 by New Hanover County and was the last of the 100 counties in North Carolina. On February 6, 1876, the administrative unit of the railway company land for the construction of the city with Courthouse received.
