Geography

The municipality is located Burghaun with its districts amid the Hessian Rhön Mountains, also known as the Hessian skittles - it is the northernmost part of the Hessian Rhön. The nine basalt cone form from the aerial perspective considered a rosette formation, with the " bowling ball " - gives its name to the landscape formation - the stubble mountain. History

The first written mention is dated to the year 1262, but the foundation is estimated to be in the 9th century. The river Haune and the eponymous knight family gave the place its name. The Knights were in frequent feud with the Fürstäbten to Fulda, which brought them there reputation as robber barons.

Partial city was chartered Burghaun in the 14th century. The city Burghaun consisted of the buildings of today's " city street ", the Protestant church and the gatehouse, which was the only access through the city wall. This is now existent only in small parts. The village consisted of the remaining houses and farms. Burghaun lost its city charter on February 23, 1854 by a decree of the electoral government of the province of Fulda.

The northern part of the country Fulda is still marked by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. The principle of " cuius regio, eius religio " ("the confession of the rule is also that of subjects" ) governed the religious affiliation. The gatehouse was built around 1400 and is the oldest building in the village. It provides the only access to the city, which was in contrast to other place surrounded by a wall. Jewish Cemetery

The 9386 m² large Jewish cemetery in Burghaun with 705 grave stones located at the southern end of the ring road. It was used from 1690 to 1941 and for the surrounding communities ( Hünfeld, Mackenzell, Rothenkirchen, Steinbach ) as an association cemetery. In 1900 had Burghaun the second largest Jewish community in the old district of Hünfeld with 189 souls on a total of 1174 inhabitants.
