Burgio

Burgio is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Burgio is 65 km northwest of Agrigento and 100 km south of Palermo. Here live 2763 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Caltabellotta, Chiusa Sclafani (PA ), Lucca sicula, Palazzo Adriano ( PA) and Villafranca sicula.

History

The Arabs built here a castle, around which developed the community. In the Middle Ages the town was the typical picture with narrow streets and winding roads.

Attractions

  • The fort was built by the Arabs, adopted by the Normans, and since the 14th century, owned by the Peralta family. The fort has a strictly rectangular floor plan.
  • Oldest Church is the built under the Normans Santa Maria di Rifesi of 1172. 1188 inhabited by displaced from the Holy Land monks from the monastery of SS Trinitas de Refech.

  • The painting "The Seven Sacraments " Zoppo di Gangi is in the Chiesa dei Cappuccini.
  • The place is home to the only bell foundry in Sicily and one of the few still producing in Italy, the Fonderia Rocco Cacciabaudo.
