Burgoo
Burgoo is an English term used in sailing ship times for a rough porridge of cooked oatmeal in water, seasoned with salt, pepper and sometimes some butter. The court was prepared especially in bad weather, since it required only a little effort and still provided enough energy for the hard work on deck. Since the inexpensive to produce Burgoo was on some ships, otherwise very often passed, the term a negative connotation for monotonous food received for mariners.
In the U.S. Southern Burgoo also referred cooked in various ways stew.
