Burgred of Mercia

Burgred (also Burhred, Burghred; † 880 in Rome) was King of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia from 852 to 874

Life

In the year 852 King Burgred was first called as a witness a lease agreement between Abbot Ceolred of Medhamsted and a Wulfred.

The following year ( 853 ) Burgred Æthelwulf King of Wessex asked for help in subduing the British in North Wales. Together both kings defeated the Welsh and reaffirmed their alliance in that Burgred Aethelwulf Æthelswith daughter married.

Burgred took over in 872 Ecgberht of Northumbria and Wulfhere, Archbishop of York with him, which had been expelled from the Northumbriern, as the chronicler Symeon of Durham reported.

Burgred remained until his death in the year 880 in Rome and was buried there in the Church of Saint Mary.

The originating from hoards of coins from the reign castle Reds consistently use the spelling Burgred instead of Burhred used in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
