Burgruine Gradenegg

The ruins Gradenegg located in the municipality Liebenfels in Carinthia / Austria.

The small already strongly conceived in disrepair castle is located about 300 m above Glantalboden on a low rocky knoll.

Specifications

The core of the system is a massive Romanesque donjon around which some farm buildings from the 14th/15th. Century group. In the west, separated from the economic complex, the three-storey palace closes at. Dating formerly from the first phase of building was rebuilt, expanded and provided with marble window and door jambs in the 16th century generous. The castle is surrounded by a ring wall from the 15th century. In the northeast corner of this enclosure is a small corner tower. Access to the castle was also carried out from the north side, where it is protected by a substantial moat.

History

The first mention was made on 27 May 1192 attested by Rudlandus de Gradnich as Ministeriale the Carinthian duke.

The Carinthian historian FX Kohla reported that Roman copper and silver coins were at, or in the castle found in 1787. Even old mines are mentioned by Kohla.

Due to the severe earthquake in 1796, the castle was badly damaged and soon thereafter only used as stables and outbuildings. A now lost drawing by the artist Markus Pernhart shows that the castle around 1870 still had all the roofs, but was conceived already in decay.
