Burgruine Greifenfels

The ruins Greifenlels is located on a rocky outcrop on the northern slope of the Sattnitzerberge in the municipality of Ebenthal. It is located near the state capital Klagenfurt, about halfway between Gurnitz and Ebenthal.

History

The castle was built by Heinrich von Wulfing and Gurnitz around the year 1230/31. The right to built a fortress on the monastery Viktring belonging possession, they were given by Pope Gregory IX. In 1315 the castle was in the possession of Auffensteiner, 1404 (or 1408 ) it came under the rule of the Lords of Hradec. After these had 1566 Ebenthal Castle completed below the castle, they gave Greifenlels 1588 in favor of their new residence. The ruin is located since 1704 in the possession of the Counts of Goëss.

Specifications

From the ruins of only very few remains can be seen. Remains of buildings can be reconstructed only at the northeast corner where a discharge block suggests a kitchen. The curtain wall comprises an approximately 35- meter long and 20 meter wide area, which is determined by the shape of the castle rock. It is therefore kinked completely irregular and multiple.
