Black Castle Hochwart

The castle Hochwart (also: chief warden, Slovenian Crni degrees) is a ruined castle south of the village Kösternberg ( Slow Kostanje ) in the municipality of Velden am Wörthersee in Carinthia. The castle is also known as the "Black Castle ", which indicates the importance of the Slovenian name.

Location

The ruins of the ancient hill fort is located on the rocky, partly forested summit of Little Sternberg in 802 m above sea level.

History

Middle of the 12th century it was Duke Henry V of Carinthia castle and lordship Hohenwart by Pilgrim Pozzuolo to the present. Henry's brother Duke Hermann sold the castle in 1162 to the Bishop of Gurk Roman I in 1365 enfeoffed the Bishop of Gurk, the Counts of places castle with the castle. Subsequently, the Counts of Celje owners, but were extinct, after which the castle in 1456 in the hands of the troops of Emperor Frederick III. fell; unclear, however, remains whether the castle was destroyed at that time, or until the 16th century.

Plant

Three farms

The castle is divided into three consecutive courtyards. From the former Altburg from the first half of the 12th century wall traces are preserved in the south of the complex to the inner courtyard, most still recognizable components in the northeast of the plant (outer courtyard ) date from the second half of the thirteenth century.

Main tower

Chapel

It stands in the outer courtyard: one enters a double chapel with a partially preserved Halbkreisapside, probably from the first half of the twelfth century, originally a flat ceiling, later protected with a steep gable roof. In the lower chapel, one can see a pointed triumphal arch, whereas that of the upper chapel no longer exists. The choirs were arched, are now crash risk; on the west wall are two rose windows.

Other walls

Remains of residential buildings and walls are still visible.
