Castle ruins Leonstein

The ruins Leonstein in the northwest of the spa Pörtschach am Wörthersee, a municipality in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia, documented the remains of a medieval castle.

Plant

The main castle is presented with irregular verlaufendem, still partially derived from the 12th century Bering grouped around two courtyards, on elongated plateau northwest of Pörtschach. Access is from the north, along the northern perimeter wall. Projects on the south side of the plant, an elongated head with rock four-storey, late-Romanesque donjon including housing, the oldest part of the plant up. In the eastern courtyard, along the northern perimeter wall can be seen a preserved remnants of late Gothic obstruction from the 14th/15th. Century. In Westhof in the Southeast corner one perceives remains of the former chapel of the 15th century, still standing on the west side remains of a late Romanesque ministerial Lien tower, the eastern half is involved in the Bering.

Upstream from the north of the main castle opens a long-range, late medieval and early modern farmyard.

The former Seeburg one locates south at the foot of the castle. Mentioned in a document already in 1202, today scanty ruins are only preserved.

History

Is mentioned in a document of the castle already in 1166, at that time owned by the Leon Steiner, then Erolzheim and Peuscher. In 1431 the castle to Thomas and Ludwig von Rothstein was sold and so went for a short time into the possession of the Swabian noble family of the von Rothstein. In the 17th century the castle was in ruins, as a representation of Valvasor from 1680 shows.

Name discrimination

When it was built around 1550 on the road, the " Stöckl " ( Castle ) Leonstain there is evidence of no descendants of Leon Steiner more. Valvasor describes to 1688 the castle under the name Leonstain. It is therefore assumed that was adopted here only the name of the former estate of Leon Steiner in at the beginning of the 17th century commonly used expression.
