Burgstein (Thuringia)

The castle is a stone about ten feet high rock in the valley of the Ilm in Lange Wiesen ( Thuringia). It consists of quartz porphyry and is since 1939 a geological monument of nature.

He was created when the Ilm valley and washed out her flushed Surrounding rock with it. During the construction of the railway line Ilmenau- Großbreitenbach in 1881 he was further exposed as the rock was removed at its base to lay the railroad track. The rock comes from the Upper Carboniferous and belongs to the Möhrenbach lineup.

His name origin is unclear. In the long meadows Straßenburg stone is named after the rock.
