He is a popular water sports area with several marinas. The Prinses Margriet Canal flows through the lake in east-west direction and connects it to the waterway network. In summer, inter alia, held on Burgumer the sea Skûtsjesilen, a multi-day sailing competition with some over 100 years old, originally as cargo ships ( Dutch: Schuitje, Frisian: Skûtsje ) used sailing ships.
Around the lake are many small towns with attractions such as Jistrum with its built about 1230 church.
