Geographical Location

Burgwindheim is located west-southwest of Bamberg in Steigerwald Ebrach between the west and Burgebrach on the east by the Middle Ebrach.

History

Unclear is the meaning of the place name, which is due either to the settlement of a man named wind or the Wendish past. The whole ( Wendish ) dog in the local coat of arms could be a hint.

Mentioned for the place first opened in 1140. The settlement probably goes back to the Frankish conquest.

In 1278, the Knights Ludewig of Windesheim bequeathed his estate to the Cistercian monastery Ebrach.

1363 received Burgwindheim by Emperor Charles IV market rights and is the oldest market of the Steigerwald.

1720-1728 was the official palace of the monastery Ebrach.

Since the Imperial Diet of 1803 the place belonged to Bavaria. The monastery Ebrach was de facto recognized only by the secularization of the imperial immediacy, so that its possessions not like the rest of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg, temporarily fell to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany, but remained in Bavaria.

Incorporations

In the course of municipal reform, the municipalities Kötsch, Untersteinach and Unterweiler were incorporated into the market Burgwindheim January 1, 1972.

Mayor Heinrich Thaler ( CSU). It was in 2002 successor of Erhard Werner ( CUW ), in 2008 was re-elected with 73.40 % of the votes and 2014 when two rival candidates with 57.11 %.

It was in 1998 according to official statistics in manufacturing and 114 in trade and transport, no social insurance contributions at the workplace. In other areas, were employed to social security at the work of 45 people. Social insurance contributions at residence, there were a total of 461 in the manufacturing sector, there was one operation, in construction 2 companies. In addition, in 1999, there were 64 farms with an agricultural area of 1404 hectares, of which 914 hectares of arable land and 489 acres of meadowland.

Breweries

In the market municipality of Burgwindheim today is no longer a brewery. The Ibel brewery in the community town of Kappel hired the brewing operation in 2005, allowing the beer to brew but in the wage brewing process. By the year 1994 also still existed, the brewery to the lion in Burgwindheim.

The host miracle

A host miracle at the Corpus Christi procession of the year 1465 made Burgwindheim place of pilgrimage. On an altar was " without outside intervention and without the action of the wind" to the monstrance, the host fell to the ground. The priest could not off the ground with all his strength. It was built a wooden shed to guard the host. The Ebracher Convention prepared in an eight-day prayer preparing to lift the host again. It then also succeeded and the abbot of Ebrach brought the host back to the parish church. The event was considered miraculous, and two years later bought a chapel to the "holy blood". The number of pilgrimages grew still, as in 1625 a source arose, which was considered miraculous soon.
