Burke County (Georgia)
The Burke County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Waynesboro.
Geography
The County is located in western Georgia, adjacent to South Carolina and has an area of 2163 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Screven County, Jenkins County, Emanuel County, Jefferson County and Richmond County.
History
Burke County was formed on February 5, 1777. It was named after Edmond Burke, a political writer and a member of the British Parliament.
The county was the home of the signer of the Declaration of Liberty of Georgia, Governor Lyman Hall, and home to nine other governors: John Houston, Samuel Elbert, Edward Telfair, Jared Irwin, James Jackson, David Emanuel, William Schley, Herschel V. Johnson and Hoke Smith.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Burke County 22,243 people in 7,934 households and 5,799 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 46.90 percent White, 51.00 percent Black or African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.63 percent from other races groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.42 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,934 households out of which 38.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.4 percent were married couples living together, 22.8 percent were single mothers and 26.9 percent were non-families. 23.6 percent of all households and 9.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.27 persons.
31.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 27,877, and the median income for a family $ 31,660. Males have a median income of $ 29,992, women $ 19,008. The per capita income was $ 13,136. 23.8 percent of families and 28.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
