Burke County (Georgia)

The Burke County is located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Waynesboro.

Geography

The County is located in western Georgia, adjacent to South Carolina and has an area of ​​2163 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Screven County, Jenkins County, Emanuel County, Jefferson County and Richmond County.

History

Burke County was formed on February 5, 1777. It was named after Edmond Burke, a political writer and a member of the British Parliament.

The county was the home of the signer of the Declaration of Liberty of Georgia, Governor Lyman Hall, and home to nine other governors: John Houston, Samuel Elbert, Edward Telfair, Jared Irwin, James Jackson, David Emanuel, William Schley, Herschel V. Johnson and Hoke Smith.
