Burkhard Malich

Burkhard Malich ( born November 29, 1936 in Schweidnitz, Silesia, today Świdnica, Poland ) is a German chess grandmaster.

Life

Burkhard Malich studied from 1955 to 1960 German History at the Martin- Luther -University Halle -Wittenberg and earned his doctorate in 1971 for PhD on the topic Late Medieval German Spielallegorien as socio-historical source. At the University of Halle he taught until 2001 Byzantine Studies. He is married and has two children.

Chess

Malich began in 1948 as a 12 -year-old with the chess game and won three years later at the Junior Championships in East Germany, in 1953 he won the youth title a second time. In the years 1957 and 1973 Malich won the individual championship of the GDR and also was still six times runner-up. At the international level, he qualified in 1963 and 1974 to participate in two zone tournaments and won the tournaments of Zinnowitz (three times in a row from 1969 to 1971 ), Amsterdam ( 1971), Decin (1976) and one year later in Leipzig.

Also in various team competitions Burkhard Malich was successful, he was 10 -fold GDR team champion with the SV Science Hall, now the successor clubs SC Chemie Halle and Buna hall. After German reunification Malich played in the season 1990/1991 with Buna Hall and 1993/1994 with PSV Duisburg in the first Chess League.

With the National Team in the GDR took Malich 1958-1972 participated in all eight chess Olympiads and was in 1970 on winning bronze at the European Team Championships involved. In 2004, he was with the German Senior Team World Champion, 2004 and 2005 seniors team European champion.

He was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1975 by FIDE. His current Elo rating is 2347 (as of March 2012).
