Burn is the eighth studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple. It was published in 1974 and was the first album with the new Mk III cast that includes first presented singer David Coverdale.

Background

Even before importing the album Burn a line-up change had occurred: singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover were replaced by David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. The new members came to the previous influences from blues and classical music additionally soul and funk as character defining elements. Even more striking, this is on the following album Stormbringer. In addition, Jon Lord now renounced the use of a Marshall guitar amplifier. Instead, he sat back on Leslie to strengthen his Hammond organ. In addition, he used on this album for the first time synthesizer.

In order to promote the sale of the new musical inspired album, the record company called Burn by saying it was the Top Album Artists of the Year in the USA on the music magazine Billboard. Only just over a month after the release the band received the gold record for 500,000 sold in the U.S. albums. In particular, the title track and the song Burn Mistreated were very successful. Both pieces were the last time in 1991 performed live by Deep Purple.
