Burning Man

Burning Man is an annual festival held in the Black Rock Desert, a salt flat in Nevada in the United States. This arose from the glacial Lake Lahontan, about 150 km north -northeast of Reno.

The festival lasts for eight days and traditionally ends on the first Monday in September, the American Labor Day. His main event is the burning of an oversized human statue - the Burning Man - On the sixth day of the festival.

The festival is not only a great art exhibition, but also a place of intense self-expression and a big party.

At the festival only pedestrians, cyclists and Art Cars are registered in recent times, which are at Burning Man referred to as Mutant Vehicles. Burning Man is famous for his particularly imaginative and whimsical art cars. Particularly noteworthy are also running mutants vehicles like the 2006 designed for the festival eight-legged steel spider Mondo Spider from 2007.

History

Founder of the festival is Larry Harvey ( * 1948 near Portland ). He organized the festival in 1986 - allegedly from lovesickness - with only 20 participants at Baker Beach, a beach on the grounds of the Presidio in San Francisco. It was then held annually with an increasing number of participants until 1990, the burning of the statue was prohibited on the beach. Then, the Burning Man Festival drew in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, because the space available on the beach was too low due to the increasing number of revelers.

Meanwhile, the organization of more than 50,000 people annually visited. The statue is about 12 meters high and stands on a pedestal, which was increased over the years more and more. During the festival originates in the desert a temporary city of tents, which are subsequently degraded or burned again. A team of volunteers ensures that at the site of the festival no traces ( in particular waste ) will leave.

For years, the demand exceeds the supply of places in the temporary city. In 2012, the tickets were awarded in the form of a raffle, which turned out to be a fiasco, since both very experienced helpers, as well as a lot of the artists who contributed to the program, were not considered. In return, ticket agent had taken part in the sweepstake, the redeemed in the case of any gain up to four times the nominal price of $ 250. Shortly before the event caused an oversupply of tickets for prices below the purchase price for trouble. 2013 will be no draw, but a pre-registration to purchase to ensure that bootleggers hardly come into play.

Chronology

The figure itself has retained since 1989 its height of 12 meters, but since the level and structure of the base has changed, the height figures will vary accordingly.
