Burt Totaro

James Burt Totaro (born 1969 ) is an American mathematician who is engaged in algebraic geometry.

Life

Burt Totaro took part in the program for mathematically gifted students early from Johns Hopkins University and began his studies in 1982 at Princeton University. In 1989 he was at Shoshichi Kobayashi at the University of California, Berkeley, received his doctorate (K- theory and algebraic cycles ). He is Lowndean professor at the University of Cambridge.

Totaro deals with topological questions of algebraic geometry, in particular within the outstanding conjecture of Hodge, one of the Clay problems.

In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing ( Topology of singular algebraic varieties ). In 2000 he was awarded the Whitehead Prize. Totaro is a Fellow of the Royal Society ( 2009).

He is co-editor of Compositio Mathematica, and was from 2003 to 2008 co-editor of the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society.
