Burtnieki

Burtnieki ( German Burtneck ) is a town in northern Latvia on the south shore of the lake and Burtnieker center of the prefecture of the same name.

History

A castle Burtneck was first mentioned in 1357 and was for many years of dispute between the Bishop of Riga and the Livonian Order. The present town was built around a farm ( Burtneek ) which was passed in 1622 to Axel Oxenstierna. In the 19th century, the ruins of the castle were demolished.

Burtnieku novads

2006 joined the communities Vecate and Matisi together. In 2009, nor the rural communities Burtnieki, Ēvele, Renceni and Valmiera added ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia ).
