Burton Downing

Burton Cecil Downing ( born February 5, 1885 in San Jose, California, † January 1, 1929 in Red Bank ) was an American cyclist who participated very successfully in the Olympic Summer Games 1904 in St. Louis.

Downing participated in all seven Olympic competitions in cycling, which were held on a running track. In six disciplines he won medals: About ¼ mile ( 402.33 m), ⅓ mile ( 536.45 m) and 1 mile ( 1609.34 m) silver, about ½ mile ( 804.67 m), he reached the third place. The race over 2 miles ( 3218.68 m ) and 25 miles ( 40.225 km ), he won.

Downing went to 1907 bicycle race, 1902, he was second in the six-day race in New York City. After his sports career, he moved to New York, where he became a successful building contractor. In 1998, he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame of the American cycling.
