Burton is a village in Geauga County, Ohio, United States with a population of 1,450 according to the 2000 census.

Geography and transport

Burton is located in northeastern Ohio.

Burton is intersected by the Ohio State Route 87, which leads to the main square. The Ohio State Route 700 and Ohio State Route 168 open into the Ohio State Route 87 at the southern edge of the square.

History

Burton was founded in 1798 and is the oldest settlement of the Geauga County. Like many other settlements in the Connecticut Western Reserve, Burton has a village square, which was planned along the lines of start-ups in the New England states. Today, this place is a traffic junction and the center of the community.

Education

The Berkshire Local School District is responsible for Burton and the neighboring townships. These are the Burton Township, Troy Township and the Claridon Township. The only high school of the school district, the Berkshire High School, located on the northern edge of the main square of Burton. An Elementary School is also located in the municipality of Burton, the second school district in Troy Township. The primary school in Claridon Township was closed in 2005. The Troy Elementary School has been sold, but still serves as a school building.

The Burton Public Library, a public library was founded in 1910 and is located in a renovated school house dating from 1884.
